Re: Review Requested: Midwest Tents

Hmm, great feedback so far. Thanks for pointing that out, Amos, about the leakage...that is definitely something that concerns me. We are also looking at the Panther, Tentsmiths and Fritz something or other tent makers. I'd rather not have to wait, though...assuming these guys don't have a huge wait...

Review Requested: Midwest Tents

I am having a think about buying a period tent. My Lady and I have looked at a few different options, and wanted to get some feedback on Midwest Tents. If you have one, do you love it? What is awesome about it? What sucks? How are they on customer service, delivery time, etc? Please share with me yo...

Re: Pennsic XLI combat reviews

Hmm. I thought the combat was great, and didn't run into any issues. People were taking my shots all war. My friends did a great job of supporting me so I could do my spearwork. The marshals doing inspection let me right on through without hassling me (and they passed the mandrake tip on my spear wi...

Yeah, sorry Marc. We somehow missed each other. I have been a fan of yours for sometime and was definitely looking forward to our planned meeting, and to some truly memorable passes with longsword.

Hope you had a great war even if it was a short one.

Re: Tuchux charity tourney info 2012

Thanks Thorvald, both for the recognition and for the invitation in the first place! This was without doubt the most fun I have ever had with rattan fighting, and I highly recommend the Tuchux tourney to any SCA fighters who like to play rough. The Tuchux dogs are not only badass fighters, they were...

I don't wear a half gauntlet either...the combination of my vambrace and cuphilt covers the required areas. I do think that the minimum armor standards should be reduced, and it should be the individual responsibility of fighters to determine how much armor they need to wear. I would take out requir...

Guys, the Idea of challenging some nimwit to an sca fight over their mouth is both stupid and sullies what we do on the field. We fight for the love of the game not for revenge. If you really think his mouth is writing checks take his ass to a parking lot and cash them. The field is not the place f...

I think you mean lack of prowess. I bet I get picked before a lot of people for all the battles that day, and I don't kiss ass. St. G- Agreed. The path to being a champion lies in KICKING ass, not kissing it. Should the original poster care for a demonstration, he is welcome to seek me out. I'll be...

Dietrich: That came to 53.75" for me of course if I don't like the length I can always cut it down. Sounds good. Give it a try and see how you like it...the two-handed sword is a weapon of elegant brutality, and I think this method of choosing length works best for SCA heavy. I also highly, highly ...

Re: Bastardsword length preference?

The ideal length of a two-handed sword for SCA combat depends on your height and fighting style. My preferred method for determining sword length is as follows: Stand the staff of rattan against the floor, in front of your right foot. Hold your right arm straight out, at shoulder height. With a shar...

I've been using one of these for HEMA since...October 2011. I fought with it at the steel longsword tournament at Fechtschule America.

This thing is a tank, and the price is dirt cheap. It's also very comfortable and I think it looks good.

I'm a fan! :D

Re: [SCA] Rules on swords with two thrusting tips

With my style of greatsword fighting, I actually prefer not to have the smashing pommel. For two reasons: 1) I get a lot more benefit out of the counterweight on the bottom, particularly with feints, twitches and the overhead 'helicopter combos' 2) If I find myself in a position where my hands and h...

Well, to start with if he is 5'8 and 44 lbs , he has bigger problems than slot shots! In all seriousness though, I would recommend he practice MOVING as he defends. Have him practice using footwork to deny the opponent what he wants to do. ie a compass step to the right closes off that shot,...

Nice work Carlyle. Having resources like this to help new fighters get going and get 'hooked' is a great thing. I usually recommend 14g or 12g stainless bargrilled bascinets to new folks. My approach is fairly similar to Gavin's. I'll carb up the day before, but I don't eat much during a day of fighting. I'll usually bring along a bunch of bananas for the potassium, and a protein drink. A couple hours after the fighting is done for the day, though, my appetite comes back with a venge...
