If your son decides to watch or try youth combat or watch the war fighting I'll more than likely see him, my mother is a YC marshal and I will be fighting with my unit the Fifth Brigade all three days of war fighting. The rebated steel looks interesting, alas I've yet to try either it or rapier. Ia...

So basically I don't see any loss or slowing down of new fighters coming into our kingdom. Of course I kind of remember when I was part of a group of 6 or so who all came in at once from the same area. Of those I'm currently the most active in the SCA and I'm not fighting much. The group has aged t...

Frau, what is you son's name? I don't recognize yours, though I might know him and have drawn a blank. Ian, I dont' think we've been introduced. I'm Dame Juliana (Laurel) and my husband is Sir Arion: m Our son's name is Johan. He'll be out at Potrero and we plan to go to Great Western. I don't know...

Thrift stores and garage sales are a great place to get quilted fabric and various protective sports gear. Even wool clothing and old leather coats can be used for various coverings. Belt buckles and belts can be scavanged too for straps. Craiglist free leather sofas can be stripped for covering pla...

Enforcement from a Marshal's perspective. I've been Sr. Marshal since the early 80s, so at various events I've been the marshal in charge of the field and have had to handle some of these issues. Usually I've discussed it with folks privately - at first there was some leniency, but we had to get fir...

Caid has had similar kingdom law since the early 80s - thats almost 30 yrs ago! People b*tched a bit at first, then just did it. I don't think it affected the fighter population at all. Its really not that hard to follow. Some of the youngsters look on craiglist for free leather sofas and strip them...

I hit hard enough that people almost always take my shots if I hit clean, and a fair amount of the time even if I hit a little sloppy. The small mumber of people I have difficulty hitting hard enough seem to pretty consistently be the same people everyone else also has difficulty hitting hard enoug...

This site mentions a convex rectangular shield which copied the ones used by hungarians. Hungarians carrying this type of shield is depicted in the Triumph of Maximillian.

What kind of doctor would not recommend an MRI for a soft tissue injury like a knee? What is interesting is when asking around, I find that the long delay seems to be more common with women patients than men. So this time I pushed for it. The doctor still preferred the same course of treatment, but...

Hurt my left knee at the end of July in 2007. Dr pushed non-surgical options in case it might heal 'without the MRI'. Xrays only. First was a wait and see for 4 weeks, then two sessions of steroid injections, then more waiting. Then hurt it worse in November, again the wait for a few months, then PT...

The fact that most SCA fighters are grossly overweight has more of an impact on the health of their knees, than knee fighting does. (Sorry if that is taken poorly, I just thought it was worth mentioning.) I have no doubt weight has an impact, but of the early fighters I know that quit fighting due ...

I think this is all sound and fury. None of these people can ruin a war, or even a battle. I very much disagree. I know of cases where people ramped up so high that the next guy they hit is out for the rest of the day or even the war, either due to injury or armor destruction. I'm sure the guy with...

Jestyr, I don't think there is a one size fits all answer. You do what you can. I think it is important to try to do something especially if you know it is the same person or group time after time or they are doing something dangerous. When I marshal wars, I see a lot of random acts that don't look ...

I think one of the things that is driving everyone kind of crazy is the touch-to-face rule. People just IGNORE it because it, well...it sucks. I feel that Estrella-style face thrusts can be a bit much, but a touch? I just can't get used to it. I don't mind being thrusted enough to rock my head back...

If someone keeps hitting harder until they send someone flying, I have no sympathy for the person who caused the ramp up. Technically you have to keep hitting harder until the receiver concedes. Some just don't concede. I've seen times where we quit trying to kill them and just went for the physical...

I CAN say that we police our ranks regularly and make sure that we do not give anyone the excuse that we win our battles through foul play. With Respect, Duke Icefalcon Glad to hear it. Funny, it was the thrust to the face from a spear at about 4 seconds in that got my attention. I'm with Frau. That's the one I thought we ware talking about first, but clearly it was not enough to convince the recipient that he had been defeated, so there you go. Slain man tells if he be slain. m b...
