Is it round-faced enough? The polish might not be high enough, but I don't have a buffing wheel, so it's not getting any mirror-like Image

I think its too flat on the center and still square shaped. Don't care about polishing it's useless. You will see your hammer face quickly lose its beautiful mirror face. Just be sur its smooth. I made one from a piece of stainless shaft with a my father's metal lathe. Now I need to weld a bar to make it a hammer. You can see it there with my other projects.

Looks pretty good - I made a pair of dishers out of those handheld sledges, myself. The trick to getting good spherical faces is to make yourself a paper template. Just draw a circle of your desired radius on a piece of posterboard, and cut it out. Then cut the piece of paper in half, so that you have a piece of paper with half a circle cut out of one side, like you took a bite out of it.

As you grind your hammer head, you can check it with your paper gage, and remove material as needed.

I agree... from the picture, it appears to be too flat in the middle. You want round as round can be.

Yes the face must be a part of a sphere.. after that, how big is the (virtual)sphere depend on the radius of the dish you want. (A breast plate don't need the same hammer of a knuckle) ... or not?

I'll give it another pass around with the grinder and post the results tomorrow. The pictures I posted actually make it looks square , which it isn't, but it is too flat on the top.

Make the paper template. Only takes a second and really helps.
