Cold water leather hardening?

As you may gather from my name, I am total newbie to armour making. I have read about several different ways to harden leather using boiling water and wax, but I also heard rumors about ways to harden it using cool water. If anyone happens to know one or more of these methods or if they even exist, any information that you could provide would be excellent.
