removing scale from mild steel

Okay, I know that this has been covered many times. I just never kept a copy of the replies because I didn't think it would matter to me...

I remember someone saying that scale could be removed with muriatic acid from a pool store. Well, in Fairbanks Alaska, there aren't any. Especially in January.

What else can be used for removing scale from mild steel? Help me out here?

The same acid is in the hardware store for removing excess cement in brick work.

Check your building supply.

I use a 4 to one ratio. Add acid to the water.
Keep your container covered and safe from freezing.

I use vinegar soak the piece over night and the scale will rub off. Some times i'll soak the piece 4-5 hours and sand the scale off.
this work well and A lot safer than swimming pool acid just takes A little longer.
Allmost forgot make sure your piece is fully submerged in the vineger or it will rust like crazy.

On old hard hot rolled mill scale, about 30 minutes.

I use a 5 gal. bucket. I pound and shape my pieces first. so they fit in the bucket unassembled.

Then go to the sanders and finishers after the mill scale is gone.

It turns into a soot that wipes right off after rinsing with clean water.

Ps: It will also remove rust, and I suppose with some resist one could etch somewhat with it.
