Pattern for a burgonet?

Post by BrotherMarc »

Greetings, kind sirs!

I'm looking for a pattern for a burgonet, to be used with Cut-and-Thrust rapier. Ideally with perforated plate/fencing mesh, but any pattern for the basic shape could, I suppose, be converted.

Thanks awfully, milords.

(on Pennsic) I know that movie. It is the 13th warrior. A bunch of guys in armour that doesn't match itself or anybody elses, go on a trip and argue and get drunk and get laid and then fight Tuchux.

Around the crown line about 23". Chin-to-crown, maybe 9".

Regular sized adult head, then. Shouldn't be a problem. Patterns are quite independent of the thickness of the metal used and with rapier fighting you can use lighter gauge metal, not so? Will you be constructing this yourself, or are you contemplating buying something Indian made and modifying with perf plate inserted on the face?

Welcome and well come to the Archive, Brother Marc! You will find many fellow SCAdians and former SCAdians here. We do get absolutely everyone here from LARPs to Living History to rebated steel groups like ARMA, so do make sure we always know what game you're designing armor for. Focuses our answers.

In our kingdom you can get away with 22g mild steel, I think, but I've been advised to go for at least 18g.

This is for SCA Cut-and-Thrust rapier with (and against) Hanwei practical rapier blades.

This will be my first go at armoring; I'll be doing it pseudo-by-myself. There's an excellent armourer here, who has, through his magnificent graciousness and gracious magnanimity, volunteered to teach me as much of his art as I care to learn. He's going to be teaching me the hows and whats and whens of... really everything, I'm a blank slate in his hands.

I'm not sure whether I should go for some sort of bevor and then an essentially flat perf plate disc, maybe permanent, across the face, or some sort of independent bent perf plate cage that would wrap to the ear-flaps, and be worn with a normal gorget, similar to the one on the marco-borromei rapier helms website. Suggestions?

Thank you, one and all!
