I've made a few pair of mitten gauntlets out of leather, but I don't think that I understand what you are describing either. Photos would be helpful. I'm pretty sure that I can't help you, but there are loads of folks here that can, but they will need to see what you are talking about.

either
I've done #3 many times. I started out with one small piece of 16ga I got from lowes. I paid too much for it, and wasted it. What I should have done was gone to a scrapyard FIRST, then, after learning on scrap, MAYBE buy from lowes. But, I depleated my funds on the 16ga from lowes, so i was stuck with a POS gauntlet, no money, and a bad desire to do more armour. So, I went to the scrapyard and bought 60 pounds of steel with 5 bucks, and now I'm starting to crank out the good stuff. I know the feeling of having limited steel, so learn from your (and my) mistakes and go to a scrapyard next time. Heck, I still use scrap for armour I'm seriously going to wear! I just try it out first on some really thin cheap galvy steel, then transfer what I learned over to thicker mild steel. (I'll use Hal's signature move here...) Bada Bing, Bada Bang, Bada Boom- you've got yourself some quality stuff, and a big ol' pile of... not so quality stuff. But, you didn't pay much for it (the scrap), and the learning experience was well worth the cheap expenses.[/list]
- get it welded and grind it down to make it one piece
- rivet a strip along the back
- or get a big box and label it "What not to do" and throw the 2 pieces in it, and chalk it up to experience
