The Armour Archive

So I've got a rad shield in the works. I'm wondering what kind of brush paint is recommended for it. The paint will be applied to the canvas surface, if it makes a difference. Thanks.

I guess it depends on what you are painting and your level of experience. I believe most opt for a modern acrylic for ease of repair and for cost purposes.

You could also go with oils but i'd recommend gessoing the surface first.

my wife has painted some stuff in the past few years. i have had this conversation before. to some it up - paint is paint is paint. pick one ya like go with it. oils will take longer to dry and prolly cost a bit more plus clean up hassle factor. enamels will dry faster but usually have the same clean up hassle factor. acrylic is cheap and easy and but wont have the same wear and shine. all will get smudged and scraped if there isnt a good top coat to protect it all. surface prep - clean, dry and smooth, primer if needed.

Do a search for "shield painting" in the armour forum. You will find a bunch of threads and how tos.

I recommend gesso, acrylic, clearcoat.

I used gesso, milk paint, and a couple coats of tung oil on mine, and it's holding up pretty well after a year of use.

One Shot.

I did some searching on the AA and came across that. It's oil based, so a bit of a pain to use, but it has a nice sheen (not shiny, but just right) and seems to be holding up well.

It isn't cheap, though, and you'll need to find a specialty art store to get it.

yep - one shot is great. i have a garage full of it - wife loves it.
