Scabbard for a Long Sword

Greetings,
My buddy asked me to make him a simple leather scabbard (with no wooden liner) for a rebated steel long sword. I have never attempted such a project, and do not wish to waste any leather.
What is the best process for making a pattern to fit the blade properly with the seam running up the back of the scabbard. Also there will not be a metal throat or chape on the scabbard so the bottom of the pattern should round off into the back seam.
Thanks,
Odeane…
