Painting armour

Has anyone painted bits of armour that aren't helmets? I have mild steel bazubands and greaves, and I've been contemplating painting them for rust protection and because, at least in my head, it looks cool. But I've never seen anything but basic spray jobs in person. I was wondering if there were pictures out there of painted steel limb defenses done right.
