Help me finish my shield design!!

Hey folks,

I'm working on a shield roughly based on those shown in The Eneide by Heinrich von Veldek, c. 1200. I'm trying to figure out how to do the final detail work, because the overall design is lacking right now - I want a bit more but I don't want to go over the top. I also want it to be plausible historically, which is hard to figure out considering all the inspiration I'm getting is coming from tiny line drawings rather than actual shields...

Anyone feel like doing up some edited designs on my photo of the shield, here? I'd appreciate the help!

Some random details I'm playing around with... I'm not sure I like the yellow but it spruces it up a bit, especially in the beak. I am definitely putting an eye -

My brother just suggested that I make the thin outline on the entire eagle in red, and then do detail work on the flowers and red feathers in white... That sounds pretty simplistic and possibly like what I'm after. Any thoughts?

I like just leaving the whole eagle white with just some crisp details to make it look finished. For a design like that, I like crisp details and stark contrasts.

Yeah, I've decided to keep it simple. I'm doing a red border around the eagle (butted against the black, not an interior line) and have done a contrasting white border over the red flowers and feathers. Should look good... Time to outline!
