WTF are they really called and how hard would it be to add them to an existing helm so I don't need a leather strap to hold the visor down on the field?

Never added on to a helm but they're called a Sneck Hook.

no not the rivet to hold the hook to the helm but the post thing the hook clips into to secure it

The "post thing" is called a rivet with a hole drilled through it. You attach the rivet to a bit of spring steel, attach the spring to the inside of the helmet, and...ya know what? A video will be easier to explain to ya.

Go to this page. Watch all of his videos about crafting armour. In one of them, he demos making the "post thingy". In addition, you'll also get a great overview of some other things, too, like riveting, raising, making a hinge, rolling an edge, forming a flute, etc.

I used a short section of 1/4" rod and turned one end down to 3/16".

The spring was made from pallet strapping, nice and springy.

He makes the anvil work for him.
Also he makes it look easy. [D'oh]

It should be noted that the hook acts more like a shear pin in the joint design.
I came acrost symalar posts sold as vervelles from windrose
or the victorian posts from horton brass.

They endup being a little off set form the surface right out ot the box but you can fix that with file.
