I was dared to make a welding mask visor for Sinrics #2 sugarloaf, but I already have finished the "normal" visor. Because I don't want to make second helmet, what would be the best way to make the visors changeable. It obviously doesn't have to be 100% historical method, but practical and decend looking (I mean, not with 4mm but and bolt).

I will send some pictures later.

Look on the pattern archive under the armet and the pig face visor. Both of those would work very well for what you want.

Hmmm...a metal welding mask...Nope. I don't see anything that could possibly go wrong with that.

Worst case senario is the welding mask becomes a ground, in that case the electricty would pass around your head instead of through it, saving you from frying your brain. Similar to the reason that high-power line workers wear maille suits to protect themselves. But you also have to have the helmet insulated from your head in some manner.

I think the bigger issue would be any spatter would stick to the helmet causing you to have to clean the helmet all the time. Also, the weight would be an issue also.

depends on the guage. I made a steel helmet for paintball ( I had a problem with getting pistol whipped) But the spatter... hmm... maybe paint it or coat it in some matter?

It may work with an auto dark mask The tradition flip top might be a little heavy as the articulation usualy loosens up through out the day.
But that may have been my paticular mask.
Usualy you only endup with spatter from welding in the 4 position or if your realy close to the weld area.
FluxCore has a lot more spatter then Tig. other processes vary depending on the rod and how much prep you have done to clean up the metal.
rust and other contaminants throw more spatter and can effect the weld integrity.

Obviously I'm not going to weld with it, I have a pretty good self darkening mask already. It is more like "don't provoke a madman" thing. The main reason why I'm making one, is one just dared me to!

Maybe you could have the pin in the hinge removable, and have a matching hinge half on the welding mask and just reinsert the pin. Or with an autodark lens you could just mount it inside if there's room for it and your face. I want to see it when it's done too!
