My "new" everyday helmet

I say "new" because it's actually a few months old and has had time to pick up a little character, and by character i mean rust and scratches.

Anyways, I've been a year round commuter on my bicycle for 6 or 7 years now, and in that time I've tried out a bunch of helmets, and hated every last one. opting to instead ride bare headed while my helmets collected dust until i could re-home them.

So couple months back i made myself a new workbench and needed a project to break it in, the bike helmet seemed like a fun one.

I built this over the course of a weekend from 18Ga. mild in an attempt to keep it light. i also figured that since Styrofoam helmets act as an ablative the ability to dent and deform within reason probably wouldn't hurt more than getting hit by a car in the first place.

Although it certainly isn't D.O.T. approved I've got a hunch that it will protect me against skull fractures better and concussions a little worse than a standard Styrofoam helmet. In any case it protects better than my thinning hair ever would

I designed and patterned it out as I went with the intent of combining the lines of a road bike helmet with a BMX helmet. I think i did a pretty good job of that, though it has since been pointed out to me by a number of people on the street that it rather resembles the helmets from planet of the apes.
Since i believe Ugo had a hand in designing them I take that as a compliment.

You are the Road Warrior!

That's awesome. It's time to show the modern folks what helmets are really about.

Great job!

:)

Now, if you did some fluting or repose' work on it... you would own the most
cool bike helm/art work for the least price on the road.

are you going to decorate it?

I'm glad you all like my helmet, I'll have to let you all know how well it actually works when the time comes.
decoration wise I'd thought about cutting out some pierce work vents but never settled on a design i liked.
I'm thinking of either russeting it or blackening it though.

I think you will feel fresh if you put some hole near the point, so that they act like a chimney.
