I feel sure that I'm beating a dead horse...

I'm looking to fabricate a Churburg-esque segmented breastplate. How does one go about getting a pattern for this type of armour??

I checked the pattern archive and did not see one.

An armourer buddy of mine mentioned that the cut around the pecs/armholes is crucial. Apparently if it is cut too wide (cut in to far) a proper shot can cause a nipple-ectomy! I would like to avoid that...

Also, faulds... are they common in EBP's time or are they later???

Any help is much appreciated.

I don't think a fauld was typical with that type of breastplate.

The shapes are not that difficult. Here's a little sketch, not a pattern, for the three centermost plates [mirror-image the left side].

The way I attached the one I made, was with a solid articulating rivet at each of the lower corners of the center plate, and a leather strap just above the midpoint. The strap was attached with a single rivet in each plate, at the centerline.

Hey Andrew, are you planning this as project/armour. Or were you just looking for and inexpensive breastplate of that style. I think Ron Simmons carries one, but I'm not sure. I can't find the link.

Anyhow, a little elbow grease and you would have a nice one.

Truehearth's version has the normal problem of not being deep enough. It is also articulated wrong.

The original is all mounted in a single piece of leather that lines the entire inside.

I use a 3 piece segmented breast plate in a similar style to what Gundo posted. If it's not to late, I suggest that you take some poster board or similar material and make a mock-up. than when you have the fit just right you have a pre-made pattern. The are some thimgs you probably won't think of until you've done a mock-up such as howmuch to overlap the pieces, where your waist truly bends and howmuch room you need at the arms. Good luck.

There's a perfectly good pattern for a globosse breastplate in the pattern archive.

Take that pattern Slice it up and add some width to each of the pieces.

Voila segmented globosse pattern.

Man sometimes I can be really slow.

BTW armour patterns aren't too hard to make. It's just time consuming. I just spent about 3 hours last night making the pattern for Thorgrim's sabatons. Which are a different style then the ones I've made previously.

There were a couple of threads hidden in the depths of the archive where someone promised to send hard copies of a segmented breastplate pattern out for scanning - did anything ever come of that? I'm willing to scan them in and host them if someone mails (I just typed "Mailles" lol) me a copy.
