I am almost done with my first helm project, building the zweihammer valsgarde kit, and wanted to see if any one had a recomendation on how/where to attach a chin strap. (I have the windrose strap kit coming in the mail.. Also, I see lots of pics of the valsgarde helm with colored cloth showing through the gaps in the top of the helm. Any ideas on how to attach cloth like this on the inside of the helm? ...and any tips on padding specific to this type of helm? (keeping it from showing on the outside)

Wear all the padding as an arming-coif you lace on you first. Slide the helmet on over that. I don't know Windrose's strap kit -- is it a 4-point chinstrap? Two anchoring points high and two low?

The windrose kit is a 2 point system.

Middle rivet of the cheak-plates as they connect to the brow-band for the upper 2 points and a long strap that exists behind the cheek-plates and wraps around the vendal slats. Works best if the vendal slats arn't chreased inwards but curved outward with an anticlastic bottom. Not everyone does it that way. If you can't run a strap around then cheek-plates just higher then the bars to the vendal slats or using the same rivets.
I find a 4-point system to be more forgiving on anchor points which means you can use construction rivets that aproximate the correct location more often.
Best of luck,
Sean
