Almost finished..

A basket hilt that looks like a gauntlet. Basically I took an old broken gauntlet and hard riveted it closed, riveted on a ring. There was no cuff, the half gaunt should cover that part though.

It is an experiment. I don't know how well it will actually hold up though.

Interesting! Is the gauntlet rather large for your hand? What are you attaching to the gauntlet to mount it rigidly to the sword? And do you think an outsize cuff could allow sufficient movement while removing the need for half-gauntlets underneath? I'm keen to hear how this setup works; you may have found a nice middle ground between the "basket hilts are the only non-hindering protection" and "gauntlets on a non-basketed sword are the only safe and authentic protection" folks.

- Kyle (who also suspects that faux-gauntlet basket hilts could be considerably easier to make than the real gauntlets)
