Sow's ear to silk purse

Well maybe not by the standards of the many fine armourers on this site, but I'm happy with the way it is turning out.

This project has been sitting on a shelf for a couple of years. It went into a stall mode when my metal working skills created something that looked like a 5 year old made it.

Since I'm a leather worker, not a metal worker I decided to stick with what I knew and use leather.

The project stalled again when I realized all of the rivets were blind and I would not be able to peen them.

Almost done. As soon as the paint dries and I put in the chin strap and the padding it will be done.

Helmet conversion from this...

Sorry for the poor quality pictures. My camera was out of batteries so I had to use my crappy phone.

edit...
New photos for the second set with new camera.

Wow! That is quite the conversion! Sure it wouldn't have been easier to just start with a new piece of steel? Or am I confused. Is the brim with eye-slots leather and only painted to match the steel? If so it's a convincing job.

The brim is leather, painted to match.

You have made a very reasonable Black sallet.
Good job!

I wonder how the leather will hold up to getting hit.

To be clear, I did not make the helmet. It was a gift from a friend who retired from SCA.

I'm only giving it a cosmetic conversion.

That took me a while Konstantine. I couldn't figure out your comment until I went back two years when I first got this helmet. and read your comment.

Well, hey, if you can catch fish by leaning out of the boat and breathing on the pond...! Think of all the bets you can win before word starts getting around. :D

Hitting Search on me as author and "worms on our tongues" gets six hits dating back to 2002.

Actually, I was looking at your string of photos in your Photobucket gallery -- the one of you holding up the fish.

I didn't realize anyone else was could see the other pics.

Not that there is anything embarrassing on them.
