Kastenbrusten from a can build.
So I tried out the square boxy version of Macs last breastplate from a can idea. I got some cad drawings from one of our forum members ( thanks a million Cet!!) and with a little modifying it turned out pretty good so far. I'll post some lousy pics asap.

And a little shaping on the left side. I left the right side flat for comparison.

Not even in my time span, but still eagerly awaiting your progress!

ok I'm gonna mess around on the weekend and I post more pics. I appreciate any feedback or ideas any one has. Like what should the back plate look like?

Does anyone know what the backplate for this would look like? And if used just as a breastplate how should it be strapped? Thanks for any ideas!

Re: Kastenbrusten from a can build.
I only know of two Kastenbrust backplates, one in Vienna and the other in the Glasgow museums. They are both fairly similar in style with the top edge slightly curved and the corners rounded. They both also have a spray of flutes that radiate from the bottom center and out towards the top. The Vienna example has 9 flutes, the Glasgow example has 7. The Glasgow breast and back do not have rolled edges, instead they have flattened bars that are riveted to the edges. The Vienna breast and back have the holes for these bars which are currently filled with rivets, but the bars themselves are missing.
This style of breast was also worn by itself without a backplate if you do not want to make a backplate. In this case the breastplate did not have shoulder straps but was attached to the arming coat or clothing with points at each shoulder. It probably did have a strap at the waist which might have buckled in back.
Are you going to be doing more shaping to the breast? The sharp edges from the corners should fade off and smooth out as they approach the edge. Like this example here:
Notice, as he his wearing the breastplate without a backplate, no shoulder straps just points holding the top on.
Here are the backplates that I know of:

Re: Kastenbrusten from a can build.
Awesome pics and info Jason! Thanks! Im not done shaping it yet, I still want to flare out the waist at the bottom and roll the edges. I did this in 14 ga as I ran out of 16 ga, so it moves a lot stiffer. I want to maybe make this available in 16 ga for SCA guys or whom ever wants one as they don't seem as common out there..its actually not that challenging to make, my first try at a breast plate was a three piece gothic..sheesh that was way more work! I thought that I could strap it to suite someone who want to do heavy fighting in it....

Looking really good, almost nobdy seems to make these.
If you made them to sell I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

Re: Kastenbrusten from a can build.
It might be possible to have a stop rib, but I haven't seen any on a Kastenbrust breastplate, not in artwork or on existing specimens. About this time you start seeing them wear plate gorgets and great bascinets which stop ribs would interfere with. Unless someone has an example I'm not familiar with that is.

I'll just make a stop rib available to the individual who wants one!
