Hi folks! Does anyone have any pics of what the back of the Black Prince's Canterbury shield looks like? Original and/or the official repro?
Thanks!

Re: Back of the Black Prince's Shield at Canterbury
Jan Kohlmorgen has a description and a B&W photo of the back of the replica shield. Give me a week or two and I could summarize the German.
The new book I was thinking about was about the achievements of Henry V.
My copy of the booklet from 1951 is buried somewhere, I don't remember if it had good photos or drawings of the back of the shield.
Edit: the back of the Black Prince's shield is covered with linen or canvas and painted green. The rawhide cover of the front is folded over the linen. It has two pairs of holes for nails or toggles to attach straps. No traces of the straps and fastening mechanisms survive. The replica filled the holes with nails and attached straps for wearing it with the arm across the shield.
Edit: Mann's booklet just has a B&W photo of the front of the shield and a short description. He thought that the back was "blue or green."

Re: Back of the Black Prince's Shield at Canterbury
A while ago someone shared another booklet by Mann where he describes how the replicas were made, but there are no photos or drawing of the back of the shield. I could forward it if you really want it, but for a one-stop shop on heater shields I would try Jan Kohlmorgen's book. For the price of materials to make one shield its full of drawings and photos of shapes and strap arrangements (and you can probably find a smartphone app which will Google Translate a photo of the text).
Mann saw "the stumps of broken nails" so perhaps the originals had gilt heads or perhaps they just rusted.
Edit: added link to biblio info. Mann said in 1954 that they tested the paint on the back and determined that it was originally green.
