So, here's this helm that I just completed for a customer off a pic that he sent me...

a) opinions on good/bad/indifferent
b) anyone know who's site he got the pic from?

I don't have any real worries about stealing work... I had to whip up the pattern myself from a single sideview pic... which is how I would have to do it to re-create one from the pages of a book, so it's my own pattern. Also, I'm thinking of adding it as an available item, since it's significantly different from my celtic styled helm... any thoughts on price and such??

Oh, I forgot to add that I am not pleased with the appearance of the welding on the far sides of the grill... if I add it to my site, I think I will incorporate my traditional reinforced, riveted grill... with the horizontal bars... but only for the lower face area.

Looks good, going with rivetted is a good idea.

Yeah, my welds are strong, but I don't quite manage that perfect appearance... also, I prefer rivetting (a personal preference).

Oh, and though I didn't find the exact match to that one on the Mandrake site, there are some very similar ones... so Mandrake is probably the origin of the pic.

Well Otto, I've heard the half hard sheets (not the rolls) would be better because they'll stand up to the abuse a helmet gets better... I'm thinking of replacing the steel brows on the helmet I bought from you and putting a brass ocular on it since I'm hiding the bar grill with an aventail. Oh yeah, I REALLY like the rivetting you do for the bar grill, and that center bar makes is super strong. Everyone in our barony REALLY loves the helmet you sold me... I've turned down a couple of offers for more than I paid for it already.

Oh, and if I use a variation on the above design... seeing as I had to make the pattern myself, how would including it as a new item on my own site be viewed by the armouring community? Is it:

a) I made the pattern myself, so it's mine and don't worry about it.

or

Just say that you were inspired by a design a customer sent you a picture (and that you're not sure of the origin) of and you developed your own pattern from that. That's honest and besides, NO designs that we use that are period are 100% original... anyone that gets offended with that kind of a disclaimer really would need to just get a clue, eh?

Ok, so what about patterns that are not 100% period but that protect vital areaas of the SCA fighter quite effectivly.
What do you all think about an armourer who lifts a pattern or two off the A.A. pattern archive and then makes money selling somebody elses NON period armour idea?
