Well its also my first try with any metal shaping at all. You can check it out at
http://www.angelfire.com/dragon2/minotaur/ . Its 14ga hot rolled. I messed up a lot when I was planishing it and it got mared up, made a bunch of other mistakes also

. I learned a lot makeing it, had a good time also and next time I will not make the same mistakes. So let me know what you think of my first try and what I should try and fix on it.

Interesting and mean looking helm.
Try a slightly heavier hammer with a lighter touch. The Hammer I use for plenishing is a 28oz ball-pien that the flat side has been polished to a mirror finish. Note: It is also very flat. No curve. I use this for Helm tops and other outside curves.

Well that is different...
Thanks for the pic.
Grind the welds down a bit and sand it, to get rid if that Orak look.
Unless that is what you were trying to do.
Happy Fantasy....

Don't be so hard on yourself. I think is a great first try. I also think it looks pretty cool for an original design. I really like the side profile and back view. I'm if on the eye slots but thats just me. I also agree next time grind down the weld.
I wish I was set up to start welding!
Good luck on your next attempt,

interesting take on a sallet. I kinda like it. Did you modify a design you found here on the archive?
Are you in a combat club? 14 guage is pretty heavy for something that isn't designed to prevent an injury. If this is for dress, you might want to try some lighter metal

I got the pattern off of the Archive. What happened was I cut it out dished and welded the top because I couldnt get my folder cutouts to take the right dished shape. When I put the folder mockups on the side and face I didnt have enough room. I also couldnt see anything with such a narrow slit. So I played around with it till I got something I liked, unfortunately I ended up with the pislon(sp) look. Next time I will cut the pieces to better fit my head and face. I used the 14ga because I got a 2x2 sheet for free. I did this mostly for learning so it came out good in that respect.
After you look at it for a while you get accustom to its face. I am not sure now if it looks more fantasy or sci fi.

I thought it looked like something I'd seen before.

Interesting take on the eye slots, and not to bad for a first try.
