THis came from a good friend stationed in Iceland:

This missive is a plea to all SCA fighters with dusty armor bits laying around, not in use anymore. The stronghold of Keflaviggur (Iceland) cannot make armor to meet the demands of newcomers since the ice has grown thick in our forges.

We lack the fundamental supplies and armor making knowledge to construct the needed armor to suit our newcomers. Sheet metal is impossible to obtain here, as are peen over rivets. (I cant belive it either!)

Thinking back upon the prowess and skill and generosity of my Trillium
homeland, I humbly beg those worthy warriors of Ealdormere (and anyone else who can) to dig into their kit bags and seek out unloved and unused pieces. Or, if you hold patterns for shoulders, knees, grieves, gorgets and breastplates and can share your knowledge, please contact us.

If anyone in Drachenwald has set down their armor and it gathers more dust than enemies blood, please consider sending it to the Icy front here in the Northern Volcanic lands for use by men and women eager to battle in defense of our pristine Dragon lands.

We can send coin to pay for the caravan costs to bring the armor here.

Why can't you get sheet metal in Iceland? Seems kinda silly...

When you think about it. Iceland doesn't have a whole lot. An average bucket of KFC costs roughtly $45 USD. This island/country IMPORTS almost all of its nessesities, yep, you guessed it, steel is one of them. Plus they may not have great skill or great room to put hammer to metal.

Perhaps we could trade armour for horses? Iceland has some of the best horses for early period re-enactment. I'd love to have a palomeno or all black Icelandic gelding!

Since the minimum wage in Iceland is about twice what it is here, I find the idea of sending them free armour to be laughable at best. I'd suggest your friends cruise some online armouries and place a few orders, they can get a helmet for less than a tank of gas in Reykavik.

I also find the plea for donations somewhat disturbing. I spent a year in Iceland stationed at Keflavik NAS and managed to build armour the whole time.

Sarnac mentioned the friend is stationed there, so they are probably military, DOD civilians or embassy types with access to the military FPO postal system. That means it would cost them just as much to ship to a P.O. box in Iceland as it does to anywhere else in the states.

I'm not saying it's the easiest place to play and build armour but it can be done.

Unto my good friends and comrades do I send greetings,

I may like to speak on this topic. It may be that the person who had the equipment has moved on. I understand that Kef is a cold, dank place and that indoor activities, such as armouring, are easier when you have not much else to do, but the facilities to do it may be lacking. There may be a serious lack of skill and items that can make a plea for help necessary. I agree that they have the shipping possibility, but when fellow rescue warriors there needed a certain vcr for mission needs, I had to ship it to them from my base because Sony would not ship to Iceland. If it happened to them, it may happen with other companies.

Just my .02 worth, but I agree and disagree. I mean no flame or anger with this post, and if it does offend, please send me an e-mail.

Your in Iceland, Just go out back and dig up some period pieces . Just look around, where there is a military instalation there is always material. As far as the skill, it dosent take mutch to get you on the field. It's only the pretty armour that requires skill.
