BMX pading under armor?

Post by Marcellus »

Has anyone ever heard of using BMX chest padding under a light gambeson? It wouldn't be period or inexpensive, but you wouldn't see it and it would be very cool on hot days.

I'm not familiar with the BMX setup, any pics? I use a set of ringette shoulders under my gambeson, they're pretty low profile; a thickly quilted chest & shoulder blades section, thickly quilted upper arm guards, and plastic shoulder cops. Over goes my gambeson & lamellar, and it's totally invisible. If this BMX thing is even more low profile, though, I could use it when I fight in just a maille shirt.

A friend of mine has done that, but with motocross armor.
I also have some friends that bought some of that East German riot armor some years back.

It's ventilated well, light, and washes easy.

That said, it also doesn't like cold weather all that much, isn't made to take the REPEATED beating that SCA armor should, and there is almost no side/rib protection.

I made my friend make funny sounds more than once because of the side protection issue.
Every time I asked when he was going to fix it, the reply was, "Man, I almost NEVER get hit there...."

when i first started fighting i used moto cross armor. it was awesome.
although it took a little modifying to the chest pieceso i could hold my arms tightly together for long periods of time without bruising.
light,maneuverable, comfortable and very breathable.
ive been contemplating selling my brig and going back to it.

Remeber, none of this stuff is armour though, just ugly pretective sports equipment which needs to be low-profile & hidden at all times, at all costs.

I agree that if motorcross or such sports equipment is used that it sould be well hidden, but it could be very useful condsidering how hot it gets so early in the year around the central valley in CA.
