Terry cloth gambeson?

Post by sedric »

Has anyone ever done a gambeson/ arming doublet using terry cloth on the interior
layer? I think that it would help draw sweat away and act as an extra layer of padding,
thus using 2 layers of cotton batting and a 100% cotton outer layer.
I would be recycling a large bath towel that is good condition, except for some fraying
at the edges.

This sounds like a pretty good idea, if you need more you can also get those packs of 30 shop cloths or something like $3 at wal-mart. The cotton really more soaks up the sweat instead of drawing it away, it will still be touching your body, but it will be in the cotton instead of on you. This is a good thing when you are hot. Once the cotton gets soaked a bit and you get a little breeze blowing across it, it sort of acts as a swamp cooler. For those of you who don't know a swamp cooler is a sort of primitive air conditioner. One way to make this happen faster than just letting the sweat soak in, is to pour some water down it before you start fighting, it should help keep you cool.

I don't know about a gambason(sp?) but i made a arming cap out of the same cloth. It works fantastic.

I used terry cloth rags to stuff my gambeson. They work well, but take forever to dry.
