brass lion head...plaques?

Post by ushumgal »

Our local armor guru mentioned that he has seen people with belt plaques like the lion-head plaque-things in the breatsplate I am working on a replica of ( http://www.macedonian-heritage.gr/Helle ... 2731a.html ) - anyone have any idea where to get them? I checked Raymond's Quiet Press, but he doesn't seem to have anything like that.

Thanks,
Kalba

You used to be able to get some drawer pulls that looked pretty similar, try your local hardware store or super sized corporate monster chain. I havent seen them in a while, but the pair I put on my first lamellar are still going strong after almost seven years of constant use. If you cant find them in the isles, try asking about them and see if they can be ordered.

Or carve up some wax and do some casting.

Thats what we use for the slider on gothic breastplates for SCA combat. (no idea if the slider is period.. but it certainly leads to knock knock jokes0

Those are the ones. They arent perfect, but if the piece is going to be a combat harness, you probably dont want to spend hundreds of dollars to have exact duplicates of the original carved and cast. I think they give a good impression, I got the idea originally from looking at photographs of Phillips iron Linotharax in Connely's books.

Hello.

For traditional bricklayer´s or carpenter´s clothing there´s chain arrangements to suspend a hammer from the belt. A special version of these is adorned by two lion´s heads. Here´s a link to give you an impression, although I am not sure whether this stuff is popular in the ES, too.

Craft and sewing shops often have lions heads as brass pressings. You need to fill the indentation of the back with solder to make them rigid enough to survive combat (otherwise your lions will soon look like kermit when he got punched in the nose)
