This is not meant to be the be all that end all replies, I'm far from being an expert on trim and brass antiquing... I would say that both patterns are appealing to the eye, I personaly didn't find the bottom one to be too unbalanced. If you do preffer the first one for its simetric aspect, one thing to consider is the item that is being trimmed. On a piece that is subjected to a lot of wear like gaunts I might recomend the bottom pattern, if it's a piece that will not likely be subjected to too much wear you could use the top pattern by installing the trim with the etched portion edge facing the inside of the piece and the raised portion towards the edge, I find that edges tend to get the most wear on an overall piece.

Good point, Taltosh. The trim is for my replica of Philip of Macedon's breastplate: http://www.macedonian-heritage.gr/Helle ... 2731a.html It is going to be used for SCA combat.
