fluted, spiral top Persian helm.

Post by hjalmr »

What is it called and where can I find a picture of one?
I actually know what one looks like, but I have had a couple inquiries about this type of helmet and I can't even remember what it is called.
Any help would be greatly apriciated.

I think what you are looking for is more of a Persian or Russian/Mongol type helm.

I could be wrong but I think the type of helmet you're talking about is called a 'zischagge'
I currently fight in the version that CLANG makes. Fabulous bucket. Best I ever owned. It's not fluted but the spiral bowl is just amazing stuff.

I looked up both the phrygian helm and zischagge helm, and although they are both close they are not what I'm looking for.

Oh well, thanks for the replies. I guess I'll find what I'm looking for when I see it.

The book I have "Empire of the Sultans" (subtitled: Ottoman Art from the Khalili Collection) pictures three helmets similar to what you describe. Two have vertical flutes and one has no flutes. This book identifies them as "turban" helmets and they are identified as made for the Ottoman or Persin market in the late 15th century.

The book is on sale at the Detroit Institute of Arts for $14.95 (regularly $23.95). The exhibit was about 25% arms & armour, but there were also books, household objects, scientific stuff, etc. It is definitely a worthwhile purchase for one building a Turkish persona.

I'm a 17th century Polish reenactor, but the Poles emulated the Turks in many ways so I've built up a fair amount of material on the Turks too.

Tariqah. It's also a type of shield shaped liked the byzantine kite. I'm currently in a house full of boxes, when I get unpacked I'll try to find the pic I have of it.
