Klappsvisier Resources

I am searching in vain for actual examples of a bulbous Klappsvisier.

I have found many reproductions (Master Cad, Master Geoffrey, Techiniques, etc), however I am coming up short on actual documentation and photos of period examples.

I plan on creating a close reproduction to an original in September, if I can find one to my liking. If anyone has resources for period examples, please pass them on.

I am hoping to focus on a Northern Italian example however, I have found these to be even more elusive than their German counterparts.

Also, has anyone used Brian P's visor hinge reproductions? I am curious as to the applications that these have been used for. And would be interested in seeing an actual application.

Thank you,

Hi Pheylin,
I was pulling my hair out over the same problem not so long ago. The museums guard their collections very well and those who do pay the US$300-$1500 for the books which contain pictures are understandably not going to share them easily.
There are different shapes of Klappenvisir and judging from the one Cad made, you are not referring to the really bulbous types, but more flatly rounded.
There are a few around, a couple of them in Swiss museums.
I have managed to obtain a single picture from kind people on the archive when I was looking for extant hinges and vervelles on helms.
I'll send you a copy, but I don't know the year, provenance or source museum, but it's a pic.

I have only been able to locate definate info on two of the globular or bulbous type clapvisors one was in the germanishes museum in Nurenberg and the other was in the... sorry don't have it off the top of my head I will find it though(swiss museum) The nurenberg I have several photos of though the swiss only a photo copy (unfortunatly it wasn't even on display). I have heard there are others but I have never seen any pictures of them. The nurenberg ex. didn't have a hinge left and the swiss had a long vertical slot crossed by two horizontal ones. I will see if I can find a scanner.

If you look in the Osprey books on the later German Armies they go into detail in the back of the back of the book. They mention several relief carvings, sculptures and what not. Not to mention where they are. I’ll try and find out what my son did with my book and post some of that for you.
