Bowl measuring idea . . .

Post by Reinhard »

I hate cutting bowls to size, getting the lines straight is a nightmare for me (and I'm an ex-surveyor!)

How's this for an idea?

Go to the tip/dump/whatever, and grap hold of an old frying pan. Fill it about 30mm deep with diluted paint. Now, just dip the bowl into the paint on the edge and the 'water level' will make a perfectly even circle. Pour the paint back into a jar when you'r finished and give it a rinse, and it's ready for next time! Image

"bowls" as in helms?

Sit the "bowl" (edge down) on a flat surface.

get it so that the crest-line runs nice and vertically and it has a pleasing shape. Prop it in that position with matches or little wooden wdges (halves of wooden pegs).

Take a marker and lay it on the flat surface and circle the "bowl".
If you hit a gap then just raise the marker by laying it on a piece of cardboard or a matchbox or something. Draw your line by sliding the marker all the way around the helm-top. Now you have a nbice even and smooth edge.

Much easier (I think)

You have a talent for making mediocre quality stuff I built look GOOD Image

I will resist thge urge to ask you to take pics of some of my old helms down there...I don't think anyone's photography skills can save them.

i do exactly what sasha does, lay the bowl flat, reach in with a sharpie and draw your line then trim.

It may be the patterns I use, but my bowl halves have horrible wobbly edges that I have to trim off with the much suffering jigsaw.
I will try that method though, because I have two halves of a sellet to do tomorrow.

(Thanks for the praise, but my wife Peta took the photos!)

For fluid leveling, have you tried bracing the bowl (sand bag works), and filling it to the appropriate level? Mark it w/a waterproof marker, empty and dry and you're set to go.

you could just use a package of jello dilute it and fill the inside of the bowl let it dry just a bit so that leaves a ring and presto done. After that you can use the jello and keep it some were for your next bowl
