Here are some stainless sabatons I made. They are supposed to be from the 14th cent. I based them off of an effigy which didn't show any rivets for articulation. So, based on that I figured they were supposed to be articulated on leathers. This makes them very supple. However, I have since learned that this style actually did use rivet articulation and just weren't shown on the effigy for artistic reasons. I also learned that they should have a crease as well. Other than that any suggestions/criticisms from you?
Oh, I will be switching to the flush rivets heads on future brass treatments.

those are sweet. Im with you on the flush rivets over the round heads but I keep looking at the over ten Lb assortment around the shop and saying " crap I gotta use those up."

Surely some sabatons were "articulated to leather" as you say. I know of at least one depiction from a stained glass which could not have been made another way. Don't presume only one method or the other could have been used.

Sasuke, fantastic job. They look great. Hmm. Would you have them strap around the heel then? I think this prototype would be a good one to develop a little more and offer with your other saby designs. I would love to see them with the crease, and compare them to the counterpart with flushed articulating rivets on the plates.

Yes, they get strapped behind the heel. I made a heel plate that the strap can go through if the customer so chooses to use it.
Ernst, I wasn't presuming that one method or other could only be used on sabatons. I was just saying that with this particular style I was mistaken in my interpretation of the articulation shown in the effigy. I was informed by a very knowledgeable person of this mistake and trust his judgement. I also learned that you have to be careful with how you interpret the effigies. Sometimes artistic license can lead you astray from the actual methods if you don't know how to interpret it. I personally have a lot of work to do in learning how to properly interpret stuff. That is what this board and other resources are for. Is there an online picture of the stained glass effigy? I would like to see it since every reference picture is a great help. Hope that didn't sound bitchy, it wasn't meant to be.

It looks a bit as if the succeeding lames do not line up at the ends all that well, but the pic may be deceiving. I'd pattern them oversize, shape them, then trim them all to fit.

looks good.. the thing Gundo mentioned; could put them up to a belt sander to even them out the edges a little... it worked for the uneven edges on my tassets and fauld.

for the domeheaded rivets on the brass.. could use a file to flatten them down a little.

and if you like the feel of the leather articulations, but would rather have the look of riveted articulations... take the sabatons apart and drill a hole where rivit would go through the outside plate.. cut most of the shafts of some rivets and rivet them into the new holes... it'd sort of give the illusion of riveted articulation.
