Tally up the monetary total for the brass on that Sutton Hoo!!

You would have about $700 invested BEFORE you even build the helm itself!

Figure he Might have a max of 10% markup to cover all the effort in making these...... with a total of about 40 very detailed plates 700 is a steal. Even Henry would agree these prices are way cheaper than it would cost you to have a helm custom made with anything remotly close to this.

go price some casting before you pee on the price:-)

(btw his shield peices are awesome)

Not knocking the price, if this is what you want.

However, I prefer to lean more towards etching. I am aware of at least two shops here in the Chicago area that would etch similar designs for a about the same price. IMHO: The application of rivetted panels in such a number as shown above tend to make the helm look gaudy.

BTW: $700 in castings + 300 for helm = $1000 sitting on your head. Anyone here willing to pay it and then let others hit it with a big freaking stick?

I do LOVE his work! I will most likely be investing in some shield adornment soon.

<i>IMHO: The application of rivetted panels in such a number as shown above tend to make the helm look gaudy.<i>

(begin humourous jibes) Ahhh "humble" opinion... obviously some of us of station know that one can never be too gaudy, lest the rabble wonder why we are in charge...(end humourous jibe)

Seriously, i think gaudiness is the point of the original. It was made to show off ones wealth, like urban youths and gold chins/rings/teeth, or having huge designer labels on your jeans, or wearing real fur (which , now makes you a target more than anything). Of course it would only really "work" for an early period persona who was hep on hard core authentic extravagance, and there arent too many of those.

Think of it as inspiratiion to improve your shieldwork to the point where you do not get hit in the head so much; "It isn't the fear of pain that makes me fight well enough to be your King, it is just that I hate polishing out those bits of duct tape and rattan that get lodged in the brasswork of the helm"
