Apprentice Works Armoury- Review

Post by Brodir »

A friend of mine popped into town for the day, we armoured up & fought for about an hour. It was his first time fighting since his new armour arrived Thursday, a breastplate, gorget, & pauldrons from Apprentice Works. I thoroughly inspected everything while he was armouring up, thought I'd post a review.

The pauldrons are kind of weird, they are dished pretty shallow & the last lame is much too small to add a bicep strap. My friend never finished strapping them & fought without, so I won't comment on function. He ordered them custom with some dragonwing fluting, the flutes were a little rough, but fairly crisp & good looking. Clearly done with a chisel, not with any modern tool.

The gorget is nice, a non-historical SCA piece which will protect well & do what it was designed to do.

The breastplate is really cool though, I am really impressed & totally considering getting one in the future, if I ever do a later impression. It's not dished that deeply, but the edges are all finished nicely, and it's a neat design (non-historical), only covering the small of the back to save a little weight. Nice piece overall, great value.

Apparently turnaround time is good, and the prices are fair. If anyone is looking for a basic/starter piece, I'd recommend Apprentice Works. Check it out.

Thanks for the review.
I've been considering apprecntice works for a new lorica (just started figting with a roman group).
He quoted me $170 for the lorica in stainless. And yes I know before anyone comes to take my head off stainless is not period. However I live close to the beach so mild steel is kinda hard to keep up where I'm at. So it's either stainless or aluminum. So I'm going with the lesser of two evils. Image
