Cleaning Armour

Post by SteamKnight »

I have a terrible tendecy to sweat and I have the feeling that once I start working on my leather armour and actually wearing, that problem isn't going to go away. And I realize that tossing the armour into a washer isn't going to do the armour wonders.

So with that in mind, can anybody tell me a good way of cleaning leather amour, specifically of removeing sweat stains?

And if you have advice about cleaning quilted padded armour with studs, I have a friend whose armour desperately needs it.

Thanks in advance for any help.

To get rid of sweat probably would be good to get some neatsfoot oil and rub it in the leathe rthen Super Sheen it. There are many types of sealers for leather that will protect it from water and mildew. Super Sheen can be found at an leather store. I suggest the Tandy Leather Factory.

For fabric I would use Scotchguard which will keep the sweat smell off of fabric...

Horses also sweat into thier harnesses; saddle soap is a traditional method of dealing with it.

Super Sheen, while pretty, might give you a sticky nasty mess if you sweat into it TOO much. I would more likely just saddle soap it, buff it very well after doing that, then make sure it dries after each use and brush it.

I dont think the sweat stains are going to _hurt_ it much.. and remember, a certain amount of that is the leather, not you. Most modern leathers will leach salts and things if they are gotten _wet_ which will show up as they dry.

Neatsfoot, or mink oil will keep it supple. Saddlesoap will give it some protection. (and a smell that you will either love, or hate).

Neat-lac and Super-Sheen are more geared towards belts and shoes and purses.. things that arent going to be worn or sweated in.. or flexed an incredible amount. (At least, thats the luck I have had with them)
