Aventail -- comments please

Post by Dmitriy »

Some fellows in Russia have been working on a few rivetted/welded aventails to be shipped and sold here..
I just got the first pictures -- what do you think? My main concern is the right angle the face triangles make with the rest of the aventail..

(in the pics, the aventail is attached to someone's helmet liner, so don't sweat the attachment details Image).

Here are the pics: http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~sca/temp/

Thanks,
-Dmitriy

I think they look alright. I could do any modification needed if I was to get one. What gauge wire and inside diameters are you using? How much? I may be interested, and know others who may be too.

(Templar Bob pricks his ears up in interest)

Indeed, what type of wire? Inner/outer diameter and gauge of wire? Do they make aventails to extend to the crown of a helmet (say, around brow-line level)? Can they make coifs, too?

Here's a scan of the maille sample that I have: http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~sca/pics/Kozlov-alternating-th.jpg

The rings are pretty small -- the wire thikness is 1.2 mm (whatever that translates to), the inside/outside diameters I am not sure, I think it's something like 9 mm outside.

The price is not determined yet -- I have to wait and see how much the shipping is -- but it will be no more than $250.

If there is sufficient interest, I might order a few huberks; alternating welded-riveted, these will cost about $800.

But really, the main reason I posted was for modification suggestions, while they are still possible..

Modifications?

1. Flatten the rings
2. see #1

If I'm not mistaken, they're somewhat behind the Indians on pricing schedules. If they could do something I could fit on a sallet in lieu of a bevor, that wouldn't go so far down my shoulders (allow room for spaulders), for $150 or less, I'm in.

The Indian riveted hauberks with unflattened 16GA rings with round rivets are retailing for around $700 (see Museum Replicas).

My imported riveted shirts with 18GA fully flattened rings and wedge rivets retail for $1195.
