My riveted aventail came in today. (From Von Sussen Enterprises, excellent work) Now I need vervelles to put it on my bascinet. I dont want to use the old cotter pin system. Does anyone have a source for ready made vervelles?

Thanks,
Stuart

There are several places to find vervells, but i found them easy enough to make myself, to forgo purchacing them. If you have a drill, a vice, and a couple of files, buy about 2 feet of 3/8 brass barstock. Cut a piece of barstock about two and a half inches long. Stick the barstock into the drill chuck just like it was a bit, with half of the bar sticking out. Lock the drill into the vice turn it on, and using the edge and corners of the files gradually file the stock into shape. Once its shaped flip the stock over and repeat the process. Finally cut the stock in half and you have two vervells. It takes a bit of practice to get the right shape, but i found i could make two of them in 5 mins or so. Once you have them shaped all that remains is the drill holes throught the head of each, a drill press will help to keep the holes square. Hope this helps...

Mandrake has three different types and at $2 each I will never make a vervelle again. I really like his square sided ones. I'm a little pissed that he came out with them right after I put sam brown stud vervelles on my helm.

Do a web search for Horton Brasses. They make reproductions of furniture hardware. I've used their 5/16 chippendale posts for vervilles, and I really like them. You can see them on my site at:
