Cheek Plates

Post by bogey2230 »

My first helm in the SCA was of my own design and built by someone in my Barony ( yes I was lucky). This person created "cheek plates" welded to the inside of the helm and when padded rested again my cheeks. This additional structure added resilency and stablility in those hard hits to the jaw while also creating the "I'm not moving feeling" to my helm. I have not seen this done in any other helmet, was it unsafe to have that created ( i never had an injury )or was it an idea that nobody thought of( i cant see that happening but still ). I am writing this note to let blacksmiths know of this "little" idea and the man's name was Lord Elric and he lived in the Barony of the Citadel of the Southern Pass in the Outlands who thought of the idea.

Viscount Karl Von Sussen and Duke Darrius both wear chin closing 'armet' style SCA helms with hinged cheek plates. I'm not sure if they rest on their cheeks though.

The only problem i have found with having padded armour against the face was thrusts, i found that they really pushed my head, but this was in a Rose armoury barbute, so it sits on the front of your cheeks as well.
