Lined armor

Post by Alcyoneus »

I'm getting just a bit tired of the plates on my pauldrons scratching the ones beneath. I know that in period, armor was often lined with leather/suede/velvet. Sometimes there were tabs that were rolled over (pecadills?).

Are there different periods where one lining material were much more predominant (or even completely absent) than others?

Same question for methods of attachment. Glued/riveted/sewn? Obviously, where there are leather straps articulating the pauldrons, I can use those rivets, but the main pauldron has large empty areas better glued down, and I could punch small holes along some edges and sew it down there.

I'm going to edge my great bascinet for this reason as well, but on that I will use light-medium weight smooth leather and punch small holes and sew it down. I'm tired of it scratching the pauldrons too. Image

In the 16th cent the few pickadils I've seen were always riveted in place. I think the 15th cent armours were done in the same way, lined bevors coming to mind.14th cent and earlier was probably mainly sewn in place. Sorry I couldnt be of more help. Otto

I think the later period stuff was made of expensive fabrics. You can see the edges wrapped around the metal on some 15th & 16th C. paintings, although you'd have to nag Chef to look them up (Sorry, I'm far too lazy).
I used prosthesis leather for mine and glued it on with barge cement. It works great although two of the more accurate armourers I know, James Gillespie and Jeff Hedgecock, both thought leather was heavy and inappropriate.
