The Armour Archive

I was just thinking about a jousting exchange piece in the RA. It is caled a Renntarsh and goes over a bevor and a breastplate. Does anyone know anything about the construction details of these things? It looks like leather bu i'm not sure. The edge looks very similar to the edge of a pavise in the RA. The guard is about 2" thick at the neck. Any info is helpful as this is all from memory. Thanks.

The spelling I'm familiar with is "targe". I've seen various forms of it, varying from highly decorated shields with horn (?) inlay, to the version which is thick and black and covers the entire left side of the armour from the saddle up to the eyeslit of the rennhut. I'm not too familiar with the terminology though, I can imagine that various forms have their own names.

If it's the full covering of the left side, my guess is that it should have a matching vamplate for the lance, something along these lines:

I can't help with construction details of the targe/tarsh, I'm curious myself too.

I talked it over with Patrick and Brian in chat and it is made of wood and leather with ametal covering or just painted. The second image is the one i am on about, i have never seen one with the metal covering on it though. I have only seen the RA one. Thansk for the pics, got anymore?

I think the used the German term for this jousting shield, it is called "Renntartsche", "Tartsche" being used for several types of shields. A pavise, if not called "Pavese", is also labelled "Setztartsche".
"Tartsche" usually os used for rectangular types of shields as opposed to the usually round scottish targe.

Well...there are books on arms, armour and even tournaments available in German, simple as that

Unfortunately I never learned a thing about arms and armour at school...including that, history lessons could have been fun.
So I had to read and learn all of that stuff myself. Besides, I am 31 years old and finished school back in 1994. All I know about arms and armour comes from what is in my bookshelves- and from the Archive, of course- which in turn sometimes gives me recommenations that make me buy more books...and tools...sometimes I think heroin is cheaper in the long run

But seriously, the categories of shields come from several sources, a German book by an Austrian named Harry Kühnel ( a little dictionary of armour and costume terms), the catalogues from Vienna and various other books, English ones among them.

OK, i am looking for a copy of Armorum Gloassarium( is that right Brian?). it is comprised of ten book 9 of which have terms in 9 different languages ot cross reference. and the tenth wiht a nifty little picture book. I will let you off then. i might make a pavise instead as this is easier and easier to sell on.
