time for a new welder

Post by losthelm »

looking for a new welder.

must run on 220 or less

looking for a stick/tig weld up.

the main features that intrest me is the ability to run 5/32 7018 lighter rod and tig.
used mostly for armour and tool work.
I am not brad loyal but somthing that I can get parts and service for is a must.
lincoln had one a few years ago that ran on 220 with both AC&DC cycle

plan on going throught and doing the AWS level one and two cert as well as the NYSDOT. Althought my pipe welding neads quite a bit of work.

probibly not anytime soon untill my savings account reaches the cost.

would rather not have to spend more then 700 as my curent budget is
230 it takes a while to save.

Greetings,
I have a Miller Maxstar 200 and love it! The only thing I wish I had done was step up to the Dynasty 200 instead so I could have AC/DC for welding
aluminum.

The entire rig will cost you about $2400.00 or so with the foot controller and torch.

You will have to buy the stick handle for it along with the wire. I bought my stick setup from a garage sale for $10.00 and spent another $25 for the appropriate connectors to work with the Maxstar.

Don't bother with the Maxstar 150. It is too limited in what it will do.

Just my $.02.

I don't know if you live in a ruralish area or not but if so, go to an old farm auction. I just saw an arc welder go in December for $60. It worked fine and was demonstrated on the spot. At that price, you don't have to worry too much about parts and serviceability. If it breaks, buy another one. For that $230, you could walk away from the auction with a servicable welder, a ton of steel, some old hammers and grinding wheels and maybe even a basket of random power tools that may or may not work well. What could be better than that?
