Hi Jengjen, I was asking, I just noticed that you had your kite strapped perfectly vertical- it's a very authentic way to strap your shield, but not that common in our game (in my experience). How do you like it, and do you have any tips or observations about that shield style?

My URL is www.geocities.com/ffutknat/ for those who would care to take a peek.
I do have my shield strapped perfectly verical, the shield in the photo is not a standard Fray shield, I broke my elbow and had to scale down both size and weight. The vertical strapping eased the tension on my damaged shield arm, and enables me to more easily keep it aligned in the shield wall. I do like the way the shield moves rigged this way, it is very mobile, but in one on one confrontations you must be quick to cover yourself.

My kite is strapped in a box pattern, allowing me to grip at an angle,side-to-side, or straight up and down.

I have been fighting with it at an angle, but I think I am going to start fighting more up-and-down.

Any hints? I have it strapped with just leather straps, so its not "rigid" and i get some table to it when just right. I can do "ok" to recover from it in singles but in melees i'm toast. However I don't want to change my strapping style.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

In Service,
Aidan

Odd, I found your website a few days ago while searching through SCA web pages....
now I find you here.
I love the pics, and the "translation" of the links is cute.

Aidan.....

In melee's, are you fighting single or with a unit? Are you in a shield wall? If fighting in the wall, may I suggest snuggling up tight next to the shieldman next to you, convince them to try the same, overlapping shields does incredible things for shield wall stability. However, it does help if you use a shorter weapon when functioning in this manner. Also, don't be afraid to use your lungs, if you find yourself alone in a bad situation, call for assistance...LOUDLY. I've had unknown shieldmen form on me, after yelling very loudly, when I found myself isolated with only a glaive to defend myself. Two shields and a glaive can survive longer together as a small unit. Geez, did'nt mean to ramble.
