Pot Helm.... Finished pic.

This is ready for the final finishing, coloring and riveting.
Image
I was thinking of polished bands, ocular cross and a blue helm.
The band around the bottom is not shown because it isn't made yet.
The breath holes are added before the final polishing.

Anyway; this is what they look like during construction.
Stay tuned for the finished product.

Looks good, Hal! Very nice job! I can't wait to see it painted! I have been scrounging around for metal for a similar project, but have been unable to find a proper amount yet! A pot helmet, because of the lack of complexity with dishing, etc... Would be a good first choice for a metallic helmet project, I think!

Hope you get some more pictures up, soon!

Cheers!

Nice! Am I being a egocentric nut or is that a bit like the photoshop mod I posted of the Shrugs helm? Just curious...

P.S. It is always fun to see your work, Halberds----Thanks!!!

Yes Mr. Buckle, the client wanted a Maltese cross for the ocular on this helm. It is very much like your photo shop.

This is for a live steel fighter and will have the leather suspension and Y-chin strap. He will be needing a period buckle from you also.

Gregory,

This helm will not be painted, it will be polished trim and blue steel.
That is what I mean by color.
Their is some dishing required on this helm too. The top is dished and the face plate is dished and shaped for the nose. The trim is dished to match the contour of the helm also. Best of luck on your helm.

Ah, okay. That too makes sense to me! I think I'll paint mine, as I don't want to take the time to blue the steel... I'd start today, if I had the metal :(

Hi Hal
Nice looking helm. How did you get the very precise fold in the helmet top where it rivets to the upper, is it raised or welded?

I have come up with a way of doing this out of need. I am not sure how others do it.

First the vertical main top is cut, shaped and welded together in the front.
This is then placed on a sheet of metal and traced around with about an inch extra.

The top plate is then cut out and dished to the desired shape. This top plate is now welded to the upper piece on the inside only.

The Beverly is used to trim around the helm crown and it is then ground with the right-angle grinder equipped with a tiger wheel, to fit flush.

A strap is rolled around the top and bolted in every hole. This strap will generally not lay down flat to follow the contour of the tapered helm so it is heated red and tapped into place with a polished hammer.

It is then removed and smoothed on the Grizzly belt sander. Then it goes to the motor mounted flap wheel, then to the buffing wheel. This finishing is important before the final riveting.

Now you know my secret. It works for me, your mileage may vary.

Hal

Ps: This is a pic of a similar helm with out the trim strap:

This the next stage before assembly. Very little finishing left to do....
Image
It now needs to be bolted back together. I remove one nut and bolt at a time, and add a rivet. That is the way I make helms.

This helm is christened..... "Justice"......

I know Mr. Mead...It looks pretty crappy now...but just you wait.

Besides this is a hundred years or so ahead of your time line.

If we had a time machine, I chuckle at the inaccuracies a modern traveler would have.

Imagine a soldier showing up for the desert storm war outfitted as a WWI recruit.

You _do_ know I was jesting  actually it was an evil scheme to shame you into putting this prize in my hands  Apparently one that failed

Yes I do; however my shelf of shame can no longer hold any more helms, and the creek is plum full of junk.

This is the last assembly before the rivets.
The color and finish are complete.

Next will be the leather suspension and chin strap.

I hope I don't add a premature rivet where the liner goes, I do not enjoy drilling out rivets.

Very nice looking! I like the blued surface, if you'd call it bluing... Darkening, however you want to put it:p Makes a nice contrast from the trim and cross!

Good job, once again, Hal'!

Hi Sebastian,

No, this is a live steel fighter I don't think your swords will cross.
This is not a copy of Shrugs. Very different. You have a one of a kind.

Hal

Ps: Did you attach the maile, I would like a pic of that.

The maille I got might be to short. I am still playing with it.
I have been fighting with bronchitis for the last 2 weeks so I am not in the Fix it now mood.
I'll get you a picture as soon as it gets the maille.

Hal,
Very nice job..AGAIN! :) How, exactly, do you expect me to catch up to you when you keep producing awesome helm after awsome helm? Maybe you could take a couple decades off while I gain some experience?? :)

Do you think that top could be made in one piece? I'm thinking since it seems to narrow at the bottom that it would be a pain in the butt when you bend the sides down. It would probably wrinkle all up.

Anyway, could we get a front picture when finished? We likes the visor. ;)

Hey, Halberds, nice helm!

I'm curious about the nose-depth of this helm.

Does it have enough room in the "visor" plate?

Mr Hal, for my future consideration, how much would you charge for a pot helm like that, but un-blued and with a nasal instead of visor?

This helm is finished. Their is nothing I can do to improve it.

The leather work is rubed down with neats foot oil.
I feel sorry for all the neats with dry feet.
I hope they don't kill them to get this leather oil.

Hi Miss. Cat.

By catching up, I meant that your ocular tool would be no good after the eyes are cut. I will have to re-think your dilemma.

Probably the best bet is to use your dishing hammer back side as a stake.
Pinch it in the vice and pound away on the flair.

Be careful not to let it rip in the corners.

Hi Mr. Orc,

I charge a lot of money for my helms.
I charge the shipping also.
I deliver on time.
No payment due until final pics.
I offer a money back guarantee.
I produce quality art.

What do you mean by a nasal on a pot helm?

Damn!
I should of had you make a suspension setup like that for "Shrugs"
Would have saved me the massive trouble of padding it so it would ride right.

Hi Mr. Orc PM sent.

Mr. Sebastian, did you use the boxers head padding with a little extra on the top?

Miss. Cat, the tinfoil method works very well; that is the way we made the skull face.

Lol, Orc... I forgot that Deepeeka made a helmet like that. Would have been much simpler! But, I've decided to expand on the image I started, so, once I finish the mail and face detail, for fun, I'll show it to you guys again;)
