Helms 450 - 550 AD

Post by Mike Garrett (Orc) »

Any one got any good pics of helms for this period? Preferably British/Northwest Europe. Other place considered. Haven't really found any decent ones
Also patterns for the same or a reasonable armourer (Hal, you got any thing like I might want?)

Definitly not my time period, but I do have a couple of pictures of helms that if I remember correctly are dated to around 500 AD. I have seen many pictures of surviving examples of this type so they must have been fairly popular. Don't take my word for it though, I'm relying on my memory here. :P

The last two are different views of the same helmet. Hope this helps,
Jason

Hey Hal,

The second two there look pretty good, but I'm under the impression that the Coppergate helmet dates to about 650 AD or so, approximately... Or somewhere within that period. Not quite back to 550, or even 600, if I'm not mistaken.

By the way, I love your Romano-Sassanid helmet!

What you need is "Migration Period" helmets. Contact Halvgrim, who has an amazing collection of pics. I'd give it to you myself, but I'm away from home and my own computer (in Indonesia, having a great time!).

Or you could google "migration period helmet" or "Volkerwanderungzeit helm" (same thing), perhaps.

It's not really armour if you haven't bled on it.

Cheers; just remembered I've got a book called Barbarians, can't remember author. It covers that period also.

And here's Halvgrimr's site, which I completely didn't think about the last time I posted!
