Striving for a more authentic look: Need Legs

Post by Xanthier »

Ok.. All the talk for authenticity has got me going. I fight with a celtic romano group. Most people in the group wear a lorica.

I want to come up with a more period leg defense for my kit.
From what I can gather Roman armies didn't really have leg defenses. It looks like I'll have to go with hidden legs. Any ideas for construction of such that would be SCA legal?

I'm going to cheez a lot of people off here.

There's authenticity, and there's not getting pounded. SCA and like fighting falls somewhere in between.

I am not one of those people that will say that if it's not authentic it doesn't belong on the field, since post 1250 is not everyone's cup of tea - and it's impossible to protect yourself properly in perfectly authentic pre 1250 armor.

So here's my suggestion: make a really baggy pair of pants, and make a complete departure from the realm of authenticity for what goes underneath them.

If you can stick to steel, leather, rawhide, &tc, more power to you. I just think that it would be much easier, productive, streamlined, and painless to look to modern alternatives.

One thing I'd look into is baseball catcher's legs. They require little modification to make them list legal, at least in some kingdoms.

I wear a pair of knee-greaves, with an articulated industrial kneeguard under it, and hardened leather pteruges (skirt of strips). The only problematic area is right above the knee. The pteruges aren't long enough to protect there, and if they were, they wouldn't move as well. I'm experimenting with sports equipment, that will be hidden under my brachae.

I have seen knee-greaves that will cover the knee per SCA regs without extra stuff, but I think they look big and clunky. Mine are sort-of historically accurate.

If you are going to go with the under pants thing, I think I can help you. Pics on my site.

I went to the site and did not see any examples of this... Can you send the direct link?

Pants don't have to be that baggy - just enough to hide your protection. Just as well you're a Romano-Celt, not a Roman - as I recall they had their lower legs bare and wore sandals. How would you hide stuff if you wore THAT!??

Do you have the rest of the kit?

Yes they are romano celt.
Basic "uniform" the group wears is a tunic and pants under armour. So I will have pants to hide things under.

Would there be any period leg defenses?
