It is odd how many people use leather, barrel plastic, and aluminum, thinking that they are going to "save weight" when in reality the thicknesses of those materials that they have to use in order to satisfy safety requirements makes them weigh considerably more than spring steel or stainless.

Right now - about 70 pounds top to bottom fully armoured. I will try to post a pic tonight.

When I finish my new kit - I am hoping that will be about 50. :)

Both stainless and spring steel are on the high end of cost; the other materials that you mentioned are lighter than mild steel for a fair protective value and can sometimes be had fairly cheeply. As well, aluminum and plastic are low maintenence (like stainless), as can a leather kit if you don't live in a high humidity area like Florida. My two kits (and they protect from ankle to hands, to gorget) are 15-18lbs each + helmet, and are primarily plastic, though not barrel plastic.

I wouldn't say spring or stainless is more expensive. It looks like it is produced for the same ballpark prices you produce plastic for.

The armour that I have that I count as mine (which is very little) comes out thusly.

Aluminum Birka-style lamellar, 6-7#
16g, 3/8" half-sleeved, waist lenght byrnie, 12-ish#
stainless gaunts, 4#
kite shield, 8#

The rest, which is kinda semi-permanent on loan to me is,
Roman-style helmet, 9#
Craptacular legs, 6# total
Junktastic arms, 4# total

So about 40# total....If I ditched the maille, 28#, but maille looks to cool. :D
