My New Visor(pics)

I'm so excited!! This is my new visor by Patrick Thaden. It is raised and not welded.
The helm is and anshelm bascinet I bought off ebay about 6 months ago.
I'll have a full review when I actually get it, but if it looks half as good as it does in the pictures expect nothing but shining remarks.
Look under past works folder, in the globose.

Beautiful! A bit to bulbous for my taste, but it's so great to see these visors done in one piece instead of welded!

Very nice. I like it more without the sharp point on the illustrated version. That looks like a complex visor to make. He has nice crisp lines on the bellows visor, too. I'm impressed.

There is evidence that bascinets and the faceplates were begun from a welded cone and then finished. When Valerius built this one, he welded a cone, and then raised it down to a round-face, making it -very- thick in the middle compared to the edge (as opposed to sinking it, which would have made it much thinner in the middle with respect to the edge). I'ld be interested to know if you have better information that contradicts this.

Hi Cheval,
Last I checked, there has been no proof for the theory of forge welding on bascinets and their visors. The Litton Bascinet in the RA was given a surface examination, but there was no conclusive evidence for the theory. They had talked about some more exhaustive tests at some future point, but nothing has been done to my knowledge - likely due to a lack of funding.
Not that it is a bad theory. I believe in the theory enough that I let Mac weld the bowl of the chapel de fer he is working on for me - it has a high point, and so he has raised the bowl out of a cone. The method worked well. In the end though, we just don't have conclusive proof yet.

That helmet is perfect for blowing bubbles while fighting.... though I would not suggest chewing gum while involved in strenuous activity of any sort. It would keep the bubble safe from harm though.

As I understand it, part of the problem with determining the use of forge welding in bascinet construction is that you really need to cut a slice out of the piece in question. I can understand why they haven't volunteered any 600 year old helmets for that...
In any cace, they probably wouldn't have used a weld for a round- faced visor. It's useful for pointy stuff, though.

Ya I really didn't want to go with the generic SCA globose visor, yet I didn't want a pig face either.
When I saw this style in a few illuminations, I knew I would have one one day.

yes, a great marval of the education system! It bought my beverly for me as well as lots of new pretty tools that I just couldnt live without, like my mig welder.
and to think, I get another one in a few months!
