For those that were interested a few weeks ago the contest has begun. I meant to post something yesterday but strong storms knocked out my phone and I had to wait to go to work to post so... The rules are below.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The point of the contest is for a new fighter to look at the info presented, and with some experienced or at least willing help, be able to create a mostly period looking harness. The contest will officially begin on March 28 and end May 23, that’s eight full weekends ( No cheating don’t begin construction till then, but planning is OK ). If you like, give progress reports as you go. Below are the rules I came up with. Post here if you see anything you think should change.

1. It will be open to all eras and cultures
2. You must maintain the persona’s period
3. It must include weapon/shield that is appropriate to the persona and must include hand protection.
4. If you don’t want to buy or build a helmet you must include a link to the site that sells the helmet and list its current price
5. No apparent sports gear
6. Plastic must be painted or covered
7. Harness must include persona appropriate garb
8. Teams are allowed and encouraged
9. No limit on money spent. Less is better ( Ideally $ 200-$400 American )
10. Submission does not need to include gloves, boots, or personal protection
11. List all tools used and include cost of tool if it non standard
12. Tools used should be easily obtainable with few exceptions
13. Use your kingdoms armor requirements
14. List all time spent including sewing time, but not trips to the store

So how and where is this "scored" and what is the prize so far (besides just a well armoured newbie)?

The shorter time limit you put on the project the higher the final price will be. One of the big points to armouring up on a budget is to be able to look for good deals and wait for them to come around.

I did begin a project early, on March 12th, to answer the need of a newcomer. You can follow my progress here:

While this project is in plastic, I hope to turn around and finish another in metal before the deadline!

I'm personally just joining the SCA. I'm working on a 14th century kit that will cost me approximately $2,500, but it won't be done for four or more months.

Can I start a second suit now, and be considered a "new" fighter, since I haven't participated yet, and do all of the work on my own with the knowledge of people around these good places to help me out? I probably won't get a helmet on time, but I read the rule, and will post a direct link to something I like, within a budget, as well!

I also already own the mail that I'd be using for this particular outfit, because I currently use it for faires. I know how much it cost, though. Can I factor that cost into the new outfits budget? I'd rather not have to buy new mail for no reason!

Let me know if that'd be okay. Thanks!

Greg, I say go for it.

The more people in the know on how to put together a nice kit on a budget the better.

Cool! If I get to the leather store on time to grab some sale items, I may start soon... If I don't, I may not do it at all.

Good luck to all goin' for this! Sounds like a very interesting "contest."

Alright, I'm game...

Hi, everyone. I'm new to the SCA (attended practices for a few months now), and have little money, so my effort should fit the bill nicely. I've got most of the materials I'll need, so I'd better get crackin! Tatami-gusoku is what I plan for my first suit (likely with zunari-kabuto, or as close as I can manage). My resources and time are limited, but I'll keep updates as best I can.

Forum-based contests have been an interesting occupier of my time recently, and maybe joining this one will get me to finally finish my armor (or start it, for that matter).

Yoi!

Gregory-get as much as you can or want to done. This is not a hard and fast contest, just a thing between gentlemen.

There is no prize for the winner except to prove a point.

I have not been following the thread on " who said it had to be cheap" because I think it can be cheap depending on your definition of cheap.

Anyway, Try to post what your project is and any updates to keep us all motivated

With Sir Morgan's kind permission. I would like to sweeten this a little and add a prize of one Osprey Warrior series book from my store. (or $15. gift cert. if the winner would rather.)

I would not be offended by folks adding to the prize pot.

Two new guys showed up to Fighter practice yesterday. Last night they were in my shop pounding out knees and elbows. I think I might get one or both of them into this competition. I'll talk to them tonight.

I will make a bet that one of my guys will get done the cheapest with a really nice kit. Any takers? I'll put up an aluminum basket hilt as can be seen on my site. Well I'll give one of those to the winner regardless hows that.

Thanks Guys, the prizes so far are awesome.

Brennus, I should be at Folls War this weekend, I'll be the fat, slow and grouchy guy with a white belt on. :)

Come by where we are camping and have a drink I should have a banner up with the heraldry that you see beside my post. I'll be the guy in the red belt in the Black and Gold.

I scanned the original posting about the contest with little interest, but now it looks like I might just have to to get involved...

The other night, my girlfriend cuddled up to me and said those maqjic words "I want to try fighting". T

his weekend, we started on her rig. I had hoped to have it all together by the end of May, so it looks like we're in the time frame...

Are we allowed mail that we already have?

Are we allowed mail that we already have?

Orc, I asked that in here already, and they seemed okay with the idea, as long as the original cost of the mail is tallied in with the rest, or the work hours it took to make!

Have you ever noticed that trying to get new people to make their armour historically accurate is like herding cats?

Any chance we can fit the next stage of this contest, pictures of work in progress, on the "Armor of the Month" site?

Armoring is finally underway!

Now, this is my first attempt at armor construction, and I'm working as time and resources permit. I've got plastic at my disposal, so that's what I'm limited to using.

Fabric backing for my Suneate, Haidate, and Watagami are complete, with the Kote coming up next. The stencils for the splints (Shino Suneate) are done (thanks to Effingham-dono)...

Next up will be cutting the plastic and drilling the holes for the kusari.

I bet I'm the only one here who has no maille rings laying around.

How are folks doing?

Better bump this up so folks remeber to post photos.
