I realized that I had never posted pictures of Beathan's and www.armourandcastings.com first SCA legal custom designed helmet.

A little info first: This helmet was designed by me for a friend based off of a conglomeration of sketches and photos from such sites like silk roads design armoury and others. It is a combination helm with Persian accents and Russian accents. The person this helm was for had a Magyar (Hungarian/russian) persona.

I worked up the sketches of what I thought would be good. And then worked with Beathan on how to contruct an SCA legal helm. Certain items changed in the making. The switch from a 5 panel spangen to a "S" spiral top and small modifications to the grill.

There was only one problem with the construction of the helm. One gap in the grill was to wide. This was easily fixed and Beathan was a champ in working with us. Since these where his first SCA helms we worked on a downpayment and then full payment upon delivery and subsquent passing by our KEM.

Let me tell you, the helm was beautiful when it arrived. All expose edges were sanded. The finish was smooth and had a high polish on it. All rivets were peened well and the whole helm was rock solid. This helm passed inspection with flying colors.

Oh, this helm is 14ga(2mm) Stainless Steel top with 16ga(1.5mm) Stainless Steel sides and 1/4" round stock Stainless Steel bar grill.

It should be noted that this was the first SCA bargrill Beathan had ever tried combined with the fact that he had never made an SCA legal helmet before.

I give this helm a Raging 2 thumbs up. I have and will be doing business with him again.

That looks pretty cool, with the twist in the overlaps and all. With age and oxidation in areas like the crevices, the design will only become more obvious (in a good way).

But ... isn't there a problem with the ends of the grille bars being (apparently) riveted to the inside of the cheek plate?
http://www.sca.org/officers/marshal/com ... ndards.pdf , section A,1,b
"There shall be NO major internal projections; minor projections of necessary structural components shall be padded. All metal shall be free of sharp edges. Face guard bars or mesh should not attach to the interior of the helm, unless of structurally superior design and workmanship.

Hew,
being a proud owner of an A&C helm I think you've answered your own question! :D

unless of structurally superior design and workmanship.

Irish,
if you don't mind me asking what did they charge you for the Helm? They have a Russian helm with a mail drape on their site that I would love to have if it was SCA legal.

Hew:
The "internal" projections do not extend far enough to create a problem and The grill is actually riveted AND welded to the inside of the helm. I am confident the grill is strong enough to pass muster.

Plus, our KEM inspected it and he passed it.

I think you need to look at the bar spacing, looks more than 1 inch. looks like you could get a 1 1/2 inch bar in many spaces. But the top looks great.

I addressed that in my review. The top bar was to wide. 2 smaller bars were welded in on the top part of the eye slots to make the gap smaller than a 1" dowel.

This helm now has black athletic tape wrapped around the grill and a small horse hair tail on it.

Did you catch this part of the post?

In the first post Insane said " This helm passed inspection with flying colors."

I am assumming that KEM is the Kingdom Earl Marshal (I can't think of any other meaning for that abbreviation). I would also think that the KEM would check such a thing.

Well their are marshals who will pass helms after you doctor them up with tape, but what I'm really trying to say. It's to nice of a helm to have to deal with that kind of a problem. To finish the job correctly change the cage and work on it so it will match the good looks of the helm.

A job worth doing, is a job worth doing well.

The site is now suspended... anyone know the deal on that?
