cleaning up bad armour

Post by Archie Zietman »

Hello...again.
Yet another question have I today! I have had this little project brewing in the back of my mind for about 4 months now, I want to recreate a Blankenshield armour, and clean it up a bit. I have decided on the "German Field Armour". But, I am wondering about the gauntlets, I am not sure of a good design to replace them because on Blankies one they're well...eeeeeew. :( so I am wondering whether anyone knows of an example of a 16th Century set of German mitten gauntlets.
Thanks,
Archie

Really though, its B***********d. you're better off looking at a lot of real pieces and starting from there.

I am not turning over to the dark side, I am just taking the armour and making a sort of..."what it could have been if it had been made well". Don't worry, I ain't turning cold on you guys! :D (There was a very bad pun-joke thing in that sentence) I am not making a blanky harness, I am taking a blanky harness and exorcising it. What I meant by "clean it up" was: completely redo it in the correct way and make it an actually decent harness. Please don't think ill of me for this. But another thing is that the construction of that harness is very simple, and very well documented, not to say that. It's the main harness at which I look, and I say: "Y'know, self? If that harness were polished, not all the edges crudely rolled, the rondell actually ROUND, the harness made of decently thick metal, the plates fit better, and the gauntlets changed, and the copper rivets w/ washers replaced with decent rivets, then it might be quite nice, and that's what I'm doing.

dont worry, i was only joking. Anything mentioning his name tends to either get laughed at or create a topic full of jokes.
Tell ya what i'll do. I'll compile lotsof images of 16th century suits similar to the 'german field armour' and put them on my archive space for you to save and study. i think i have some mittens too.

If you want it to look like the real thing, start with 'the real thing' as a model.

Don't try to make a good car starting with a Yugo (especially if you found a beat up clunker in the junk yard ;-) ), copy a Mercedes.

But with this type of bending over mechanism:

And I might replace or put on top of the left pauldron, something like this:

Try to find somehting real but like the valentine armouries suit. Basing it off of something real will give you less headaches as there will be more images and decsriptions of real pieces. if you get my meaning.

would it be feasible to do something like picture MI02351g02a in relatively thin metal? (18 and 16 guage) It would probably not get much use, and be a display piece, so thickness would not be a major concern.

I'd use 16 for most of that, 18 for the gaunts and gorget.
