Peascod Breastplate

Post by Archie Zietman »

I am going to start a peascod breastplate/fauld/tasset project soon, and I am wondering whether any harnesses had peascod breastplates?
Thanks,
Archie

yes. Half harnesses of the mid-late 16th century utilised the peascod and pigeon breast style of breastplate.

Here's an excellent picture of a reproduction by Tom Justus (SCA - Master Eldred Tremayne) of a peascod belly breastplate with faulds. It's a gorgeous piece, and I hope to have one very like it someday.

I love that look.

Also, if you look at Jacob de Gheyn's An Exercise in Armes there's all sorts of pics of guys with similar breastplates.

Gotta love late period stuff.

There were a lot of harnesses made with the peascod type curaiss.

Not only half harnesses but complete garnitures with exchange pieces.

The Art museum here in Chicago has 2 or 3 complete suits of such armour, complete with gilding and blackening.

They are quiet awesome!
